Class 1

Welcome to Class 1

Welcome to Class One. Mrs Smith is the class teacher, supported by Mrs Davis as the class teaching assistant.

Our new topic, for the final summer term is 'The World Around Us'Image result for the world around us

We will be looking at books from around the world (focussing on Africa), as well as non-fiction texts. We will learn about the seven continents, and we will compare the place where we live with other countries (focussing on Africa). We will learn about animals from around the world and how to care for them. We will carry out art and craft activities from each continent of the World.

In maths this term we will work on place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will learn about fractions, how to tell the time and name 2D and 3D shapes. Home learning will consolidate the skills covered in class, and are aimed at making the transition to the next year group as smooth as possible.

PE this half term will be on Wednesdays and Fridays, and we will continue going to the forest. We will develop our physical skills in the indoor and outdoor area, including the forest. We will make clay models, cut with scissors and master our handwriting skills. We will run, jump, climb, hop and skip.

The children will carry out continuous provision challenges within the classroom to support and develop their knowledge and understanding on this subject. Some examples of this are;

  • Make African pottery.
  • Make an Australian, aboriginal piece of art.
  • Role play being in a travel agents.
  • Write post cards and letters from our 'holiday'.

Hook Day

Our Hook Day will take place on the first day back. We are going to learn a song to remember the seven continents (see if your child can remember this when they come home). We are going to jump straight into our topic by thinking about the place that we live. In the morning, we are going to walk around the local area, taking photographs and considering the houses, rivers and businesses in our local area. In the afternoon we are going to 'fly' to Africa and think about what it is like to live there. We will consider the housing, education, water supply and job opportunities. We will also carry out African art and craft activities.

Forest Friday

Forest Friday’s will continue on Friday's. Please check dojo to see when your child is attending.

Parents of the reception children should continue to fill in WOW moments at home. These can include any special moments that happen at home. If your child achieves something new, shares learning from school, goes on a special trip or visit and learns something new or completes a task that you are particularly proud of, please write it on a WOW card and we will share these at school and add them to your child's learning journey. The cards are kept by the main door on Miss Hodgsons WAGOLL wall.

Class Dojo

Your child will continue collecting points throughout the week for displaying attributes set by the class. The children each have an 'avatar' of themselves. The person who collects the most points throughout the week will then be rewarded with a certificate at the end of the week.

Reception children will begin receiving homework. This will consist of short phonic, handwriting and maths tasks. These pieces should be completed at home. Please leave your child's homework folder in their book bag so that I can see how they are progressing.

Children in Year 1 will continue completing homework tasks. They will be given a homework folder with a bingo sheet  and task cards inside. You should encourage your child to choose a topic task to complete and then complete the given maths task. Two tasks should be completed every two weeks (one topic and one maths). Please return your homework on the dates given on your bingo card. The bingo card is attached below and these, along with the task cards can be re-sent if mis-placed.

Please feel free to ask if you are struggling with colours or pens and pencils at home.

As always, our door is always open to you!
