Hello everyone and welcome to Maple Class.

Class Teacher: Miss Lomas

Class Teaching Assistant: Miss Crowther

We hope you have all had a wonderful Easter break and that you are feeling energised and ready for the busy half-term ahead.

English

We will begin the new half-term in English with a non-fiction unit. The children will be writing explanation texts based on our book 'Until I Met Dudley' by Roger McGough. We will then move on to a poetry unit and the children will write their own poems.

Guided Reading

Guided Reading will be done using a whole class approach.  We will be continuing with the beautiful novel, 'How to Train Your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell.

We have a real passion about reading at Water Primary School and we encourage our children to have a love of books and reading also.

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to use Power Maths and the children will be taught in year groups.

Year 3 children will be learning about fractions and then moving on to money.

Year 4 children will be learning about decimals and then moving on to money.

Timetables are also a very important part of maths and we will continue to develop our understanding of this by using TT Rockstars daily.  It would also help the children considerably if they practise at home.

Please note that Year 4 will carry out a timetables check in July 2024.

Science

In science, our Year 3 children will study Light. They will begin by learning how light is needed in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light. They will then explore shadows and how they are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object.

Our Year 4 children will study states of matter. They will begin by comparing and grouping materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. They will then move onto observing some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C).

Geography

This half-term year 3 and 4 will be learning about Volcanoes.

This will involve looking at what a volcano is and some of the world's most well-known volcanoes. We will then explore what causes a volcano to erupt and what happens during an eruption. We will also explore why people live in volcanic areas and what the benefits and disadvantages are.

P.E

PE will continue to be taught in mixed year groups with PE continuing to take place on Tuesday afternoons for all children in Maple Class. Please could you ensure that children come to school wearing the correct P.E. kits on the day of their session.

Readers

We expect children to be reading at home most nights for around 10/15 minutes. We want to encourage a love of reading as much as possible so that children can understand the key aspects of reading.

Spellers

The children will receive spellings every Friday to learn for the following week.  We will complete our spelling activities every Friday.

Snack

If you wish for your child to have snack, this will need to be paid via Parent Pay.

A note from Miss Lomas

Thank you so much for your continued support.
