Hello everyone and welcome to Maple Class.

I hope you have had a lovely summer break and enjoyed some well-deserved rest with family and friends.

This year will be filled with many exciting opportunities and experiences for our children.

PE DAYS: Wednesday and Friday

English

This half-term we will explore the classic story 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. The children will develop their reading comprehension by predicting, summarising and making inferences about the characters and events in the story. Children will build their vocabulary by exploring ambitious words and phrases used by the author and discussing their impact on the reader.

Throughout the unit, children will learn how authors create interesting characters, settings and suspense. They will identify features of different text types before applying these in their own writing.

Guided Reading

Guided reading will be done using a whole-class approach.  This half term, we will be focusing on the book Toto by Dermot O'Leary

We have a real passion for reading at Water Primary School, and we encourage our children to have a love of books and reading also.  

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to use Power Maths and the children will be taught in year groups.

During Autumn 1, Year 3 will develop their understanding of place value and begin using this knowledge to solve problems. They explore numbers to 1,000, compare and order numbers, count in different ways and represent numbers using practical equipment and pictorial models. Children then move on to addition and subtraction, using formal written methods and mental strategies to solve calculations and explain their reasoning.

During Autumn 1, Year 4 will  build on their place value knowledge by working with numbers to 10,000. They compare, order and round numbers and use this understanding to solve reasoning problems. They then develop efficient methods for addition and subtraction, including exchanging, estimating answers and solving multi-step word problems.

Timetables are also a very important part of maths, and we will continue to develop our understanding of this by using TT Rockstars daily.  It would also help the children considerably if they practised at home. 

Please note that Year 4 will carry out a timetables check in July 2025.

Science

This term, children will explore the fascinating world of rocks and archaeology. They will investigate different types of rocks, comparing and grouping them based on their appearance and simple physical properties. Children will learn how rocks are formed and discover that some rocks contain fossils, providing clues about life millions of years ago.

Alongside this, children will be introduced to the work of archaeologists and explore how they use evidence from the past to learn about ancient civilisations. They will investigate artefacts, ask questions, make careful observations and use scientific enquiry skills to draw conclusions about how people lived long ago.

P.E

PE will continue to be taught in mixed-year groups with PE taking place on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Please could you ensure that children come to school wearing the correct P.E. kits on the day of their session. 

Readers

We expect children to be reading at home most nights for around 10/15 minutes. We want to encourage a love of reading as much as possible so that children can understand the key aspects of reading.

Snack

If you wish for your child to have snack, this will need to be paid via Parent Pay.
