Water Primary School

The 'Water' Curriculum

English

At Water Primary School, we are ambitious for our children to have the best possible life chances.  We believe that English is the foundation for learning across the curriculum and a key to unlocking every child’s potential. Our intent is to develop confident, enthusiastic readers and writers who can express themselves clearly and creatively. Through a rich and varied selection of texts, we foster a love of reading, build vocabulary, and encourage thoughtful discussion. We support children to become effective communicators, with strong skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

SMSC and The English Curriculum

Writing

At Water Primary School, we want every child to enjoy using language and feel proud of their writing. Writing is a key part of the English curriculum and helps children express themselves, build creativity, and communicate clearly.

Our writing curriculum is designed to:

  • Support children in planning, drafting, editing, and improving their writing
  • Build strong foundations in spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Encourage children to write for a range of purposes and audiences
  • Help children develop confidence and enjoyment in writing

We follow the National Curriculum for English, ensuring children are taught the skills they need to become fluent and effective writers. Through model texts, shared writing, and opportunities to write across the curriculum, we help children know more and remember more as they grow into thoughtful and capable communicators.
