Hello everyone and welcome to Class 3!
We are sure you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year and are looking forward to continuing learning in Class 3! Myself, Mrs Cole and Mr Riley cannot wait to see all your smiling faces when you return to school! I also can't wait to hear all of the exciting stories about what you got up to over the holidays.
Our new topic
I am so excited about our next topic! This half term we are learning all about the London, as part of our London vs Lancashire topic which will run until Easter.
Over the next 6 weeks we will learn all about where London is within the world, and within the UK, how London has grown and changed over time and some of the geographical features of London, including it's landmarks. We will also learn about some of the attractions London has to offer and even design out own! We will all be creating collages during the first week back, using colours as a background for our London skyline!
In English, we will be learning all about the Hodgeheg, a story by Dick King Smith. Well will also be producing information texts all about London.
Our Maths focus this half term is Multiplication and Division, including how to use formal written methods correctly. We will also continue using Doodle Maths and TT Rockstars to help us improve.
Every two weeks, you will complete a Mental Arithmetic quiz, using a number of skills to answer the questions. Just like last half term, you will receive a sticker if you score full marks, or improve on your previous quiz score.
We will be continuing using a whole class teaching approach to Guided Reading, and everyone will be reading 'Charlotte's Web' together. Through this we will read out loud, answer questions and work in our Guided Reading books to use retrieval and inference skills.
We also expect everyone to be reading at home most nights, whether this is independently or with an adult. Please can you ensure that your reading records are signed when you read and returned to school in order to be checked. These are checked daily so you can read as many books as possible. The minimum expected is 3 times per week, but praise and prizes are given out if you read 5 or more times a week.
In Science this half term, our focus will be on Forces and magnets. We will look at what pushes and pulls are, and the forces behind these. We will also look at what a magnet is, and it's uses.
Our P.E. lessons will be on a Thursday afternoon. From the second week back, Year 4s will be taking part in swimming lessons again at Marl Pits. This will be for 4 weeks over this half term and will be every Thursday afternoon. Please can everyone ensure they have:
Swimming costume or swimming trunks (not baggy swimming shorts please), a towel, swimming caps for anyone who has shoulder length or longer hair, a brush if needed.
We would like everyone to attend school on a Thursday in their PE kit,as we will be teaching Maths and English in an active way. Please can everyone ensure you have:
White T-shirt, blue shorts and black pumps for when children are indoors. Hoodie, longer tracksuit pants and trainers for outdoor use only. Can you please ensure that you are able to remove their own earrings for safety reasons for those lessons.
For homework, you are expected to complete 3 pieces from the homework sheet over the half term. In addition to this, I expect as much home reading to be done as possible (minimum 3 times a week). You are also expected to complete work on TT Rockstars and Doodle Maths. Lastly, spellings will be completed every Tuesday- the spellings are updated weekly on Spelling Shed and stuck in your home spelling books for the following week. That week's spelling score will also be written in, and you will receive a sticker for gaining full marks.
We will continue using the class reward system Dojo. You will collect points for a number of things, including participating, hard work and helping others. Each week the winner of the dojo points will get to take home our very own tiger, Tarzan, who came back with us from Knowsley! Over the weekend it would be fantastic if you could take a selfie with Tarzan in an exciting place and be creative with what you do with him.
A last note for parents...
The door is always open in Class 3. If you ever have any queries, worries or would like anything explaining, please don't hesitate to come in. I am always available and will help you in any way I can. Mrs Cole is in Wednesday to Friday and Mr Riley is also in everyday with the children, and will also be of help if needed. If you would prefer to speak directly to me, please feel free to contact me through the Dojo system, and I will respond to your query or set up a time to speak in person.
I can't wait to see you all, hear all the fantastic things you have done over the holidays and teach you all of the exciting things we have to learn this half term!
