Hello everyone and welcome to Class 3!
We are sure you all had a fantastic Summer holidays and are looking forward to starting the new year in Class 3! Myself, Mrs Cole and Mr Riley cannot wait to see all your smiling faces when you return to school!
I am so excited about our next topic! This half term we are learning all about the Roman Empire. Over the next 7 weeks we will learn all about who the Romans were, what they did and what happened to them. We will look at the way they dressed, their style of artwork and the rulers. In addition to this we will be creating our own mosaics, Roman helmets and visiting real life Roman sites at Ribchester!
In English, we will be learning all about a very famous story, 'Where the Wild Things Are'. This is for our English topic, fantasy settings. I cannot wait to see all the wonderful writing that you all produce, using fantastic language and description! After that, we will be moving onto Myths and Legends, and this will have a great link to our Romans topic, as we will study 'Romulus and Remus', a famous Myth from Roman times.
Our Maths focus this half term is place value, Roman Numerals, Addition, Subtraction and 2D shapes.
We will be continuing using a whole class teaching approach to Guided Reading, and all the children will be reading 'Charlotte's Web' together. Through this we will read out loud, answer questions and work in our Guided Reading books to use retrieval and inference skills.
We also expect children to be reading at home most nights, whether this is independently or with an adult. Please can you ensure that their reading records are signed when they read and returned to school in order to be checked. These are checked daily so the children can read as many books as possible. We also expect children to be completing 3 pieces of homework each week, to be handed in by Wednesday.
Our P.E. lessons will be on a Thursday afternoon. From the second week back, Year 4s will be taking part in swimming lessons at Marl Pits. This will be for 5 weeks over this half term and will be every Thursday afternoon. Please can all children ensure they have:
Swimming costume or swimming trunks (not baggy swimming shorts please), a towel, swimming caps for anyone who has shoulder length or longer hair, a brush if needed.
We would like all children to attend school on a Thursday in their PE kit,as we will be teaching Maths and English in an active way. Please can every ensure they have:
White T-shirt, blue shorts and black pumps for when children are indoors. Hoodie, longer tracksuit pants and trainers for outdoor use only. Can children please ensure that they are able to remove their own earrings for safety reasons for those lessons.
We will continue using the class reward system Dojo. Children will collect points for a number of things, including participating, hard work and helping others. Each week the winner of the dojo points will ge to take home our very own Gruffulo! Over the weekend it would be fantastic if the children could take a selfie with the Gruffulo in an exciting place and be creative with what they do with him.
The door is always open in Class 3. If you ever have any queries, worries or would like anything explaining, please don't hesitate to come in. I am always available and will help you in any way I can. Mrs Cole is in Wednesday to Friday and Mr Riley is also in everyday with the children, and will also be of help if needed.
I can't wait to see you all!
