The 'Water' Curriculum

Forest Schools at Kenton's Wood

At Water Primary School we aim to use Forest Schools to encourage and inspire our children through positive outdoor experiences.

By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks and activities in a woodland environment (Kenton's Wood) each child has an opportunity to develop intrinsic motivation, emotional and social skills.

The children have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others. Our Forest School programmes run throughout the year. Children use full sized tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, establish and grow in confidence, self-esteem and become self motivated.

Forest Schools will aim to develop:

  • Self Awareness
  • Self Regulation
  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Empathy
  • Good social communication skills
  • Independence
  • A positive mental attitude, self-esteem and confidence

Health and Safety checks

We will carry out daily site risk assessments and ensure all that each member of our group has the appropriate clothing and footwear. We will provide safety briefings pitched at the appropriate level for the group and we make sure the accompanying adults know the site entrance and the emergency evacuation point.
The daily Risk Assessment of the site will make sure there have been no major changes have happened since the last visit that might cause problems. This is recorded and appropriate action taken if necessary.

Please see our gallery for pictures of our recent Forest School Sessions.

Our Level 3  Forest School Leader is Mr Claxton and each session is supported by Mr Riley and class teaching assistants.

Mission Explore  - John Muir

These missions will help you follow in the footsteps of nature conservation’s father figure - John Muir. They are for everyone who dares to explore the world with Muir’s spirit of adventure and curiosity.

Inside ‘Mission:Explore John Muir’ you’ll find 20 Muir related missions, and some of Muir’s words from over 100 years ago. Your challenge is to complete and record as many missions as you can.
