Hazel Class - Year 1/2
WELCOME TO Hazel Class
Class Teacher: Miss Ashworth
Class Teaching Assistant: Mrs Collins
Welcome back to the new school year everyone! We hope that you have had a lovely summer break and are looking forward to being back.
We have lots of exciting lessons planned for this half-term.
In English this half-term, we will be looking at The Way Home for Wolf, which I'm sure will excite lots of you! Over this half-term we will be creating wanted posters, be using a range of drama techniques to help us engage with the text, letter writing, and we will finish the unit by writing our own animal adventure stories.
In Maths, we will first be focusing on place value in both Year 1 and 2.
Year 2 will then be focusing on addition and subtracting, and will finish the half-term with money.
Year 1 will also be looking at addition and subtraction and will finish the half-term on shape.
Multiplication is a pivotal part of Maths education and underpins so many aspects of the curriculum through school. It would be so beneficial if at home, children could be practising times tables. The primary focus should be on 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s for Year 2s and 2s, 5s and 10s Year 1s.
Our topic this half-term is exciting because we are learning all about the United Kingdom! We are going to name the seas around the UK, use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the UK and its countries, locate countries on a map and place capital city names in the correct place on a map.
This half-term our topic wil be animals including humans. We will think about what animals and humans need to survive and our basic needs, we will look at life cycles and learn how to look after ourselves. We will learn lots of new keywords in our topic.
Get caught up in a book...
In Hazel, we understand the importance of reading and expect children to read for at least 10 minutes each night. It is important that we instil the skill of sustained reading into our children rather than just reading a few pages a night. This will encourage a love for reading as well as helping with fluency and expression. Record books will now be checked daily by Mrs Collins, and we will also encourage a love of reading through choosing books from our reading corner.
In Guided Reading Year 2s will be reading The Clockwork Dragon, whilst the Year 1s are reading Beegu.
Our P.E. lesson this half-term will be on a Monday afternoon for Year 1s and Tuesday morning for Year 2s. Please could you ensure that children are wearing the correct P.E. kits.
The children will receive spellings for the half-term. These will be handed out on Friday 10th September with our first spelling check on Friday 17th September.
Our Forest school day for Year 1 is Friday and Year 2 forest school will take place on a Monday.
Please can all children bring their forest school clothes (wellies and waterproofs) to school in a bag and then they can put them over their PE tracksuit before the session.
Year 1 forest school will start on the 10th September and Year 2 will start on the 13th September.
