Maple Class - Year 3/4
Welcome to Maple Class
We hope you have all had a brilliant Christmas, a fantastic New Year and you are looking forward to the new term ahead. We have had an amazing first term and we can not wait to see the children in January. Miss Launder is the class teacher, supported by Mrs Cole, Mr Riley and Miss Fourie.
Our topic for this half-term is 'God Save the Queens'. The children will learn all about the change of power of monarchs, using Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth II. The children will then make a comparison between the queens and write a diary recount.
In English, we will begin by looking at a film unit called 'Dreamgiver'. This is a fictional unit and the children will be writing their own fantasy story based on this beautiful film. We will then move onto a non-fiction unit based on the books 'Diary of a Cat Killer' and 'The Day I Swapped My Dad For a Goldfish'. The children will use these stories to write their own diary recount based on the books. The children will then look at a poetry unit and write their very own Kenning poem.
In Maths, the children will continue to look at division, multiplication and perimeter before moving onto measure, fractions, money and statistics.
Timetables is also a very important part of maths and we will continue to develop our understanding of this by using TT Rockstars daily.
Guided Reading will be done using a whole class approach and this half-term we will continue reading the fictional book called 'Toto. The children will develop skills by answering questions relating to vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and the children will summarise key concepts.
We have a real passion about reading at Water Primary School and we encourage our children to have a love of books and reading also. We expect that everybody reads at home most nights, whether this is independently or with an adult. Please can you also ensure that the children bring their reading record and home reading book to school each day so it can be checked, changed when needed and so that the children can read to an adult.
Our science focus this half term is Plants. The children will learn everything they need to know about plants. They will learn the names of different parts of plants and the jobs they do. The children will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate what plants need to grow well and will present their findings to their classmates.
Furthermore, they will have chance to predict what will happen in an exciting investigation into the transportation of water within plants. They will work in a hands-on way to identify the parts of a flower and will explore the different stages of the life cycle of a flowering plan.
Our P.E. lesson this half term will continue to take place on a Thursday afternoon. Please could you ensure that the children are wearing the correct P.E. kit.
A note for parents
We appreciate that the last few months have been extremely difficult but please do not hesitate to contact Miss Launder if you have any questions at all. Due to the current situation we are unable to make appointments, however Miss Launder can be contacted via the school office or on Dojo and she will get back to you at her earliest convenience.
Keep safe everyone.
We cannot wait to see all the children in the New Year and we are so excited for a new term.
