Maple Class - Year 3/4
Welcome to Maple Class
I hope you have all had a fantastic summer and you are looking forward to the new term ahead. Miss Launder is the class teacher, supported by Mrs Cole, Mrs Sanderson and Mr Riley. It has been such a strange few months and we are all so excited to see you. We have missed you all so much!
Our topic for this half-term is 'Off to Europe'. We will be taking a trip across the English Channel to discover the continent of Europe. Not only will we be studying fascinating facts about Europe, we will find out names, locations and features of European Countries and capitals. We will then compare two European countries.
In English, we will be starting the term with a non-fiction unit. We will begin by exploring lots of different texts about the Loch Ness Monster to help us write an information text. We will then move onto a fictional unit, based on a story about the Loch Ness Monster, to help us write a narrative.
In Maths, we will begin by looking at place value and number before moving onto addition and subtraction. This is a very important unit of work which underpins a lot of the subsequent work that will take place throughout the rest of the year and will give the children a solid understanding of key concepts.
Timetables is also a very important part of maths and we will continue to develop our understanding of this by using TT Rockstars.
Guided Reading will be done using a whole class approach and this half-term we will be reading the beautiful story of 'The Firework-Maker's Daughter'. The children will develop skills by answering questions relating to vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising.
We have a real passion about reading at Water Primary School and we encourage our children to have a love of books and reading also. We expect that everybody reads at home most nights, whether this is independently or with an adult. Please can you also ensure that your reading records are signed when you read and returned to school in order to be checked and changed. Many thanks.
Our Science focus for this half-term is Animals Including Humans. We will study the digestive system in humans and animals and the functions of teeth. The children will also learn more about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores in the context of teeth, digestion and the food chain. In addition, the children will extend their understanding of food chains to more complex chains and food webs.
Our P.E. lesson this half term will take place on a Thursday afternoon. Please could you ensure that the children are wearing the correct P.E. kits, however we are aware that there has been a delay with school uniforms and PE kits.
Our Forest School lessons will take place each Monday afternoon, which will commence on the 14th September 2020. The class will be split into two groups and each group will have a three week block, the details of which are as follows:
Year 3 - 14th September 2020 x 3 weeks
Year 4 - 5th October 2020 x 3 weeks
Please ensure that all children wear waterproof, warm clothing and wellies.
A note for parents
I appreciate that the last few months have been very difficult but please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all. Due to the current situation I am unable to make appointments but if there is anything at all you wish to discuss, I am available on Dojo or you can call the school office and I will get back to you at my earliest convenience.
I am extremely excited to be teaching in Key Stage 2 and I am very much looking forward to hearing all about the wonderful things you have been doing during last few months.
