At Water Primary School we are always reflecting on, reviewing and developing our curriculum to ensure that it best meets the needs of our children. Our curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be responsible citizens.
At Water Primary our curriculum is:

Organisation of the Curriculum
The curriculum is topic based and includes Literacy units. Each year group has a half termly topic that is designed to inspire learning. Topics include skills and knowledge from the following national curriculum subjects:
- Design and Technology
Mathematics, Computing, PSHE, PE, RE, Music and MFL will be taught discreetly but linked to the topic when relevant.
Each topic includes a range of enrichment activities to support and enhance the learning. Lessons will use a range of teaching and learning strategies, vary in structure to suit the purpose and encourage independent learning.
Before the start of each topic children will be asked to suggest what they would like to learn during the topic. Teachers will adapt planning to include these lines of enquiry and the children will have the opportunity to explore their own areas of interest through an independent project. Each classroom will have a topic working wall display that reflects the learning journey. At the beginning of each topic there will be a ‘hook’ day to engage, entice and excite the children.
Planning the Curriculum
Long term plans are in the form of topic and subject overviews developed in line with the National Curriculum programmes of study. A highlighted whole school document keeps track of which objectives have been covered in each year group and ensures progression and coverage.
Medium term plans begin with a topic web mapping out the intentions of the topic and a learning journey that includes National Curriculum learning objectives and child friendly ‘I can’ statements.
Short term plans take the learning objectives from the medium term plan and show how the learning will take place.
